When we get back to the pack, it’s already evening. We don't have much time to get ready for the mating ceremony, but there's enough. Ryla still hasn't given me her decision yet, and after making love to her passionately in the forest, I'm not going to press her about it.

I’ve finally realized that this was her life and her decision, and I respect her enough to let her make it on her own. I have no say in the matter at all. All I can do is show her the kind of home that she could have here, and the kind of man that I would be for her.

When we reach the pack, Ryla will either go to the cabin to get ready for the ceremony or leave. Either way, there’s nothing that I can do to try and stop her this time. But I’m not sure whether I should just let her go again without chasing after her like I did before. I’m at least going to wait and see what she chooses to do.

Much to my great relief and surprise, as soon as we step foot onto the campground, Ryla turns to me and tells me that she’s going to stay.

I don’t know what to say in response to her decision. I want to say something wonderful, something to show how happy and relieved I am that she’s going to go through with it. But instead, I just stand there in a pleased stupor, smiling at her like an idiot. Ryla tosses me a quick smile in return, and then she disappears into her cabin with some of the other female shifters who are giddy and giggling in order to get ready for the ceremony. Even after she goes inside, I stand there staring at the closed door until Patrick comes up to me and puts his hand on my shoulder.

“All is well now I presume?” he asks. “We were worried when the two of you didn’t return, but it seems it was for good reason.”

“I can’t believe she agreed to go through with it,” I say. “I can’t believe she’s going to be my mate by the end of the night.”

“I can,” the old man says as he grins wisely at me. “I could see it in her face from the moment she got here, even though she was trying hard to hide it—even from herself.”

“See what?”

“The feelings she has for you.”

I’d stand there for the rest of the night until the ceremony starts if the elder didn’t given me a solid smack on the shoulder and tell me to go get ready. I walk to my own cabin thinking about what will happen in just a few hours’ time. This is going to change everything. Ryla is going to stay and lead the pack with me. I hurry into my cabin to get cleaned up, thinking about tonight, and about our earlier tryst in the forest.

When the ceremony begins, Ryla steps out of her cabin to walk toward the center of the campground, flanked by three of the matronly elders.
